Submitting an article for publication

How can I select a journal for submission? I've developed an article that I think should be published, but I need help deciding which journals might be appropriate for it.

Answer

Here are some favorite tools for this kind of question:

The first is Journal Citation Reports. This tool allows you to evaluate the highest cited journals within a discipline. You can find it by clicking on Web of Science from "Featured Resources," on the LRC's homepage, and then selecting Journal Citation Reports from the top navigation bar.

While you're in Web of Science, you could also execute a search using the keywords relevant to your article. On the right hand side of the screen you'll see an option to "Analyze Results." From there you can drill down to "source titles" for a list of journal titles to review.

I'm also quite fond of a tool called JANE which will match your abstract to articles in PubMed that have similar keywords.

If you're interested in finding Open Access journals, you might also want to consider consulting the Directory of Open Access Journals. We have more information on Open Access journals in our OA Guide.
